musicals make me happy

That’s it. My life will never be the same. I am forever changed by one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Maybe that’s an exaggeration, but not too much of one. It really is a fabulous movie. Friday afternoon, you see, I was reading all my regular blogs, and Lauren was talking about all these movies she’d put on her Netflix queue, and how that night, she was planning to watch Once. She offered up her place to anyone who wanted to join her, and with the words, “Irish musical,” I was sold.
I am telling you, friends, I form opinions about movies really quickly, but rarely do I love one so much so fast. I mean, we finished the thing around 1:00 a.m., and as soon as it was over, we were like, “What is open right now that will sell us the soundtrack?” Doubting very much that Wal-Mart would have it, I decided just to wait until the following afternoon to hit up Best Buy, where I purchased both the soundtrack and the film itself. I’ve been listening to the music ever since, and I just watched the movie again this afternoon. It made me just as happy the second time around, and I have every idea that it will hit the spot every time I watch it.
So if you like good music, good stories and cute Irishmen, check it out. Or just come over and watch it with me. I’m always up for it.
Now, apparently one of the songs from Once is up for the Oscar for best song along with three of the songs from Enchanted and one from August Rush. I haven’t seen August Rush, so I don’t know anything about that one, but of the four songs I have heard, I’d have to say it’s a really tough call. I think I’ll pretty much be happy with whichever one wins. They’re just all so different, I don’t know how anyone could choose between them.
It’s a good thing I don’t choose the Oscar winners. We would have to split the category into various song genres, in which case, they’d all win. Or else we’d have to do what I do in class every time I have to make a decision. That’s right…eenie meenie miney moe. What? It’s American culture.

What? There are people with functioning eyes and ears who’ve yet to partake in the loveliness that is Once? So sad. I am glad to have filled that perfect-little-musical-shaped hole in my life and I’m glad I could share it with you, buddy.

You may already be aware of this, but the guy from Once is the lead singer of a band called The Frames, which is a real rock band. Like, not pop rock or hairband rock, but your straight up rock, a la Springsteen or something. I didn’t like it before I watched the movie, but now I am listening to it all the time.
And warn your friend Lauren that superbad is superawful. And I love gross out, vulgar comedy (I think I have a teenage boys sense of humor) and this was too much for me. Just a warning. She can take it or leave it.
