stay of execution

September 1st, 2008

Whew, so I found out that my afternoon class actually starts NEXT Tuesday, so I have another week to get ready for it. Which means I spent the whole day in my jabambas watching Arrested Development.

I keeeeeeed. I only watched like two episodes, and I really did do a lot of work on the class, but I did spend the whole day in my jabambas until around 7:30 when Whitney and I decided to go to Q’Doba for dinner. And then we watched Bella, which was a really sweet movie. I liked it a lot. A LOT. I think some of you might really like it too.

But let’s talk about the obvious thing here. I mean, it’s high time. As you know, I’m not so much “into” politics. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever discussed politics here at Onward Hoe!, and what’s more, I pick up a lot of political news/information on Facebook, so I think it’s fair to say that I’m pretty apolitical. But I was doing some research on McCain’s girl, Sarah Palin, and according to Wikipedia (which I’m sure is not the most reliable source of information), homegirl doesn’t believe that global warming is caused by humans, but she still went on ahead and “followed through on plans to create a new sub-cabinet group of advisers to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within Alaska.” So the obvious question there is - Why? If it’s nothing we’re doing, what on earth could we possibly do to change it?

Also, she calls herself “as pro-life as any candidate can be,” but she’s also in favor of capital punishment. This, friends, simply baffles me as I was under the impression that “pro-life” meant “in favor of life.” So everyone has a right to life now until they prove to a court of law that they don’t deserve it any more?

Oh, let’s just hit two more, shall we? She’s been to three (count ‘em, THREE) places outside of the U.S. (SUPER-great for foreign affairs), and she doesn’t even know what the Vice President DOES! To be fair, I don’t know what the VP does either, but I get my political information from Facebook and Wikipedia whereas this woman runs a state. She should know these things. Isn’t there some sort of equivalent within state government?

I know, I know. Who am I to criticize? There’s no way I could do things any better than she could, but that’s why I’m not running for Vice President of the friggin country. So what do y’all think? Is McCain out of his mind to pick her as a running mate? Do you not care because you were going to vote for Obama anyway? Are you happy now because you think McCain doesn’t stand a chance now and is, in fact, driving his supporters away, assuring an Obama victory? I mean, either way, it’ll be groundbreaking, but I just do not know about this woman.

I’ll have to see what Facebook has to say about Obama in the next couple of months.

Interesting information. I’m just amused that the commentators think that Palin is going to win over voters who wanted Hilary. Umm, isn’t Palin kind of the Anti-H.Clinton? Except for her gender, of course. Maybe they think us silly women won’t notice her views and will just vote for her cause she’s a girl like us?

Global warming — Sounds like her opinion is “I don’t think it’s a threat, but just in case it is, we’re going to look into what we can do about it.” That sounds like really good policy on a number of issues.
Abortion, death penalty — come on, I know you can tell the difference between a baby and a convicted felon. These are two separate issues, and any attempt to compare them is akin to saying anyone against global warming shouldn’t wear sweaters.
On the role of the VP — if you’ve seen the clip ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oro2Yh9HoEM )it’s obvious that Palin made the comment in jest and to build confidence among citizens of Alaska that she wasn’t looking to leave the Governorship. Nonetheless, she has a point. The vice president’s job is very poorly defined. They become president if the president can’t hold office and they break ties in the Senate. Neither of that addresses what she asked, what the VP actually does all day long. Sit around and wait for the President to die? The fact is, beyond those two things the VP does exactly what the President wants him/her to do. So, her response was right on, as the person offering her the position would be the only one who could tell her what her job would entail.

Elaine - I know, right! As if anyone who liked Hilary would look at Palin and think, “Yeah, they’re pretty similar.” As confused as I am by Palin, you have to admit, she’s much cooler than Clinton. So if you like Hil, you’re going to think, “This woman is a total flake.” But if you didn’t, you’re thinking that you either like Palin or that you largely disagree with her, but you’d still rather have her at your game night party.

Brad - This is precisely why I don’t discuss politics (apart from the fact that I am mostly clueless in that department). Everyone is so passionate about their own beliefs that you basically don’t get anywhere in talking about them. But I’ll say this anyway:

Having watched the VP video (thanks), I’ll give you that one. Good point. And I think that if she were to become the VP, she’d find a way to keep busy and not be a Joey Deadweight (as Whitney and I like to say). However, I think she is VERY intent on pushing her own agenda (who isn’t?), and her agenda includes a lot of helping out Alaska, which is cool. I mean, they’re her peeps. But if hooking up her own state’s rather lucrative oil business means neglecting that pesky little global warming problem (which just sort of happened to begin coinciding with the industrial revolution), then I have to wonder what else she’s conveniently letting slide.

She does seem to genuinely care about her constituents, though, and if she and McCain were elected, and she realized that she was serving all of the country and not just Alaska, she might start to see the bigger picture. Who knows?

But don’t get me started on abortion vs. capital punishment. You’ll just make me angry.
