    mo’ money, mo’ problems

    By beth | April 4, 2008

Man, truer words have ne’er been spoken.

So…remember last semester? You know, when I worked my butt off all day, every day until I finally had a wee nervous breakdown? Remember how I celebrated when it was over, and how I didn’t want to think about it ever again? Yeah. It’s come back to haunt me.

I got a phone call today saying that I’d been over-paid each month last semester, and it added up to a whopping amount that they now want back. That’s problem number one. Problem number two, which is really bigger than problem number one, is that I didn’t notice it at all. I mean, I knew I was getting paid more money than usual, but I was also working almost twice as much as usual, so I just figured that was the reason for the extra money. Makes sense, doesn’t it? I thought so too, but I really should know how much I should be receiving each month, and I should check to make sure that’s what I’m getting. So I have to take partial responsibility for it, but still. It sucks.

Just to be sure, I went back and looked at all my contracts from last semester. I had eleven. ELEVEN contracts for one semester. And two of them should have been changed, but I only have a change form for one of them…the insignificant one. ‘Twas the giant one that went unnoticed.

So I have to sit down with several financial and boss-type people (deans of various things) in the next week or two to “discuss my options.” I’m willing to bet that one of my options is not keeping the money and forgetting the whole thing ever happened. But I might suggest it.

So who wrote the contracts? Who made the payroll error? I’ll be it wasn’t you in either case! So NOT paying it back should be an option for you as you didn’t make any mistakes, but I’m guessing that’ll happen when pigs fly. Reality bites!

Oh man! That suucks! What if you promise to make some of those cool shirts like you made a while back for them? Maybe then they’ll let you keep the extra?
