    It is finished.

    By beth | December 19, 2007

I went to see Sweeney Todd last night, which I didn’t love. There were parts of it that I liked a lot, and there was one scene I loved, but the rest I found to be just sort of…meh. It was very bloody and very dark, and the rhyming in a lot of the lyrics got on my nerves. I know, I know, lyrics are supposed to rhyme, but let me give you an example or two.

    Easy now,
    Hush, love, hush,
    Don’t distress yourself,
    What’s your rush?
    Keep your thoughts
    Nice and lush,
    Wait.

I was with her through the first hush and rush, but when she got to lush I thought, “Now that’s a stretch.” Here’s another example:

    I feel you,
    Johanna.
    I feel you.
    I was half-convinced I’d waken.
    Satisfied enough to dream you,
    happily I was mistaken,
    Johanna.
    I’ll steal you,
    Johanna,
    I’ll steal you.
Do they think that walls can hide you?
Even now I’m at your window…
I am in the dark beside you,
buried sweetly in your yellow hair!
    I feel you,
    Johanna!
    And one day,
    I’ll steal you!
    ‘Til I’m with you then,
    I’m with you there…
sweetly buried in your yellow hair!

This one was just too cheesy for words. And that’s all I’m going to say about it.  It was good to see the movie on the big screen. I don’t think I’d have liked it much at all at home, but if I were you, I’d save it for the $1.50 theater. Apart from the ridiculous amount of blood and gore, I have to say that, visually, I thought it was very well done, which is why I’m glad I saw it in the theater, but the story line is a little ill-developed, and it is very dark.

Anyhoe, that’s not what I meant to write about. After the movie, Whitney and I were headed to Chipotle for a vegan burrito bol, when my phone rang. It was “Leo” calling very nonchalantly, as though we’d been dating for a month, to see how my day was. This is a nice enough thing to do, but it struck both of us as somewhat out of line because we aren’t dating. We aren’t even friends really. I know things would be different if I’d been interested in him, though. We would have both swooned over how sweet it was, and I would have been very encouraged that he’d called the very next day after our coffee meeting. But since I wasn’t interested, the reaction was quite different. I knew something must be said, and soon.

So when I got home, I sent him The E-mail. You know the one. Will called it an “electronic Dear John letter,” which is exactly what it was, and you know what? I’m relieved that I sent it. I didn’t want to wait until he asked me out again to tell him I wasn’t interested, and I didn’t want to avoid his calls and be all weird. I figured it would be better to just do it. Like ripping off a band-aid. And I guess it was. He wrote me back this morning thanking me for my honesty and wishing me luck, and that’s that. Match closed.

Back to the drawing board. If only I could find the door-opening dude from 518 West…

      Missed connection:
I think that might have been me at 518 West. Were you a stunning brunette wearing fabulous shoes and did our eyes lock for just a brief instant?

Did you like those shoes? They’re not my favorites, but they’ll do. The rest is true, though. I am a stunning brunette, and our eyes did lock for a brief instant.

hmm…. I don’t really want to see it. Although I like Johnny Depp.

I can’t remember…did I tell you about the sword-bearing pornographer I met on the subway?

Ummm…no you definitely did not mention a sword-bearing pornographer. Do share.
