my feet: an update
Many of you have been asking about how my feet are feeling a week after the walk. I thank you for your concern/curiosity. My feet are MUCH better. My blisters have turned into the hardest callouses on earth. I’m thinking of going jellyfish-stomping this weekend (just for Will, who will find that utterly disgusting). The pain I was feeling in my right arch/ankle area seems to have subsided significantly with rest and gel heel cups. And my right knee is totally fine.
I have discovered, however, some odd discoloration in my left big toe nail. Having not had a pedicure in quite a while now, my nails had grown out (and been subsequently cut off, don’t worry) such that only about half of my toenail was covered in my signature fuchsia polish. Well, as I was removing my socks the other night, I noticed that the part of the nail peeking out from beneath the polish was kind of…gray. So, I removed the remaining polish to get a better look and found that the whole thing is that color. Kind of bluish-purplish-gray.
I don’t think it’s my actual toenail that’s discolored. Rather, I think I have some bruising underneath the nail that’s causing it to look like that. And that toe hasn’t felt quite right since the walk. Whitney looked at it on Saturday and can attest to the fact that it just doesn’t look normal. I thought (and still kind of think) that I had a blister under my toenail. I don’t know how that’s possible, but I don’t know what else it could be either. Any ideas? If my toenail falls off, I’ll be sure to let you know immediately. Oh wouldn’t that be exciting!? Like a battle wound!
In related news, The Rack Pack has two official members with a third on the way tomorrow and perhaps several more still to decide and sign up. I’m thinking t-shirts are in order. Anybody know a good screen printer?

Hey,
The toenail thing happens a lot when walking long distances. My younger brother had it happen to his toes each backpacking trip we’ve been on except the latest. It may end up falling off (his did), so sorry about that…
I think the theory is that shoes that are too small cause it. Your toe hits the toe of the shoe, and the toenail gets gently pounded into the nail bed. A bajillion steps later, the nail bed is totaled. Feet swell when walking long distances, so maybe the shoes you trained in were ok for the training distance, but too small for the main event. That’s my theory for the moment.
